Memoirs of a Bearded Cosplayer

Memoirs of a Bearded Cosplayer (aka Chris) started cosplaying 11 years ago, and what started as a creative hobby has grown into a passion that has shaped both their personal and professional life. Throughout the cosplay journey, they've horded a blend of handmade and purchased costumes, becoming best known for characters including Spock, Jubilee, Scarlet Witch, Red Hood, and Sinister Strange. Some of their favourite handmade builds include the Wicked Witch, Delphox, Officer Jenny, Astral Doctor Strange, and a medieval-inspired Scarlet Witch and a Ghost Face-inspired Red Hood. 

"For me, cosplay has always been about much more than wearing a costume. It has pushed me well outside my comfort zone and taught me skills I never imagined I'd develop from sewing, prop making, costume alterations, and makeup to social media, public speaking, event management, and community leadership. Every project, whether successful or challenging, has been an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve."

As their passion for cosplay grew, so did the involvement in the Australian convention community. Today, Chris proudly serve as the Cosplay Coordinator for FraserPOP!, The Collectors Market, Enchanted Faire, and GHMX, while also working as a convention consultant for NamiiCon and Comic Geddon. Alongside these roles, Chris manages the social media for AusCos Mag, using the platform to promote cosplayers, celebrate the community, and share educational resources that help others develop their own cosplay journeys.

Throughout the years, Chris has appeared as a special guest at conventions across Queensland, judged cosplay competitions, collaborated with vendors and creators, and even been featured on a cosplay web series.

"These experiences have allowed me to connect with an incredible range of people while helping conventions create engaging, welcoming experiences for attendees."

Creating inclusive spaces is one of Chris's biggest passions. They strongly believe cosplay should be a hobby where everyone feels safe, respected, and encouraged to express themselves, regardless of their background or experience. Whether it's organising cosplay activities, mentoring new cosplayers, or simply chatting with someone at a convention, the goal is always the same: to help make the community more welcoming and supportive.
